How Long Does it Take for a Tattoo to Heal?

10 December 2024

Before getting a tattoo, you should think carefully about the design, the size of the tattoo, the location and the color palette to be used. Preparation is very important to achieve the desired result.

Research tattoo styles and make an appointment with reputable tattoo artists to discuss your ideas, view their portfolios and examine the hygiene of the studio.

You will need time for the tattoo to heal properly and to avoid complications (e.g., if the tattoo is badly left on the skin or becomes infected).

Signs of Poor Healing

A tattoo does not heal properly if there is persistent redness, abnormal swelling, lumps or even a rash.

Pus (yellow or green) is a clear sign of infection, accompanied by foul odor, fever and excessive sweating. If you have noticed these symptoms, you need immediate attention.

Allergic reactions are accompanied by irritation or unusual “bumps” on the skin surface.
Avoid tight clothing and UV rays (sun) during the healing process. Prompt treatment in case of infection will prevent long-term damage or health problems.

How Long Does it Take for a Tattoo to Heal?

The time it takes for a tattoo to heal varies depending on its size, its location (areas of constant movement or rubbing) and your skin.

But healing usually takes 2 to 4 weeks for superficial healing and up to 3 months for complete regeneration.

The first phase lasts 3 to 7 days and is characterized by redness, swelling and oozing (the skin reacts to the tattoo). During this period, a mild moisturizing cream should be applied to protect the area and reduce the risk of infection.

The second phase, which lasts 1 to 2 weeks, is characterized by flaking, crusting and itching. The skin begins to repair itself. Avoid rubbing, scratching or picking at the scabs to prevent the ink from falling off and scarring.

Keeping the tattoo clean and moisturized will speed up the healing process.
Complete healing takes place during the final phase, which can last several weeks or even months.

The appearance of the tattoo stabilizes as the deeper layers of the skin regenerate. The appearance of the tattoo also changes.

Complications (allergic reactions, infections, dehydration, etc.) may delay healing or even require laser surgery. We recommend that you follow your tattoo artist's instructions to the letter.

The 3 Stages of Healing

At the beginning (between 3 and 7 days)

Redness, swelling and oozing are common. The skin gradually closes, requiring careful cleansing and care to avoid infection.

Crusts form in 1-2 weeks

The skin becomes dry, crusty and itchy. Moisturizing without scratching is essential.

Complete renewal (several weeks)

Reconstruction of the deeper layers allows the tattoo to regain its vitality.

Tips for After Tattooing

Remember to wash the tattoo gently with a mild, unscented soap. Dry it gently and apply a thin layer of hypoallergenic cream (or tattoo ointment).

Natural products such as pure coconut oil can help, but ask your tattoo artist for advice and avoid products that may cause allergies.

Wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce irritation and avoid direct exposure of the tattoo to UV rays. Exposure to animal hair, saliva and other contaminants can also cause infections.

Scratching the tattoo delays healing and promotes sores.

Vitamin supplements (vitamins A and D) will be good for your skin.

Conclusion: Final Healing Phase

The final regeneration phase lasts several weeks (or even months). The deeper layers of the skin heal completely. Then the real glow of the tattoo appears...

Redness and swelling should subside during this period: if not, you need medical attention.

Remember: good hydration, sun protection (avoid exposure to the sun) and continuous care are essential to preserve the appearance of the tattoo and ensure a long-lasting result.
